Plant protection product, pesticide or biocide?

According to the legislation, a distinction is made between plant protection products, pesticides and biocides.

Pesticides are used to combat undesirable organisms. The term pesticide comprises plant protection products and biocides.

The difference between plant protection products and biocides is the following:

  • Plant protection products protect crops against harmful organisms or combat weeds. They are mostly used in agriculture, but also in the garden. Examples are herbicidesn fungicides and insecticides. An example of a well-known herbicide is plant protection products containing glyphosate. Glyphosate is the active ingredient - active substance - of the product.
  • Biocides combat harmful organisms as well, but they are not strictly related to agriculture. Examples are disinfectants, rat-poison, wood preservatives and repellents.
